Ok so we are going to wrap up the diesel exhaust fluid closed loop systems with this entry by highlighting this question:  What do I need to refill a DEF tote on location?

Our recommendation will always be to stick with Micromatic’s closed loop systems for DEF.

So, now you understand the basics for a one way tote (from our previous entry) with a closed loop system, let’s talk about how to refill that same tote over and over again; which would be a great savings over time, don’t you agree?

Now, a DEF closed loop systems is important for the following reasons:

  • Causes Premature Catalyst Deactivation
  • Fouling of Pre-filters & Injector Nozzles

1. SS Fill Head Coupler- Closed, Sealed & Secure– Spring actuated and self-closing upon disconnect keeps product contained within the dispense hose, eliminating any chance of spills. Dry Disconnect – Less than 2 milliliters.  Reusable, Durable Stainless Steel Construction. Part#744-026

This is the part that you need on your refilling system, the tank or totes that you are carrying around to refill your customers.  You will need to remove the existing coupler on the customer’s tote and take this fill head coupler and secure it on the IBC. Your hose will run from your delivery truck to the IBC to start refilling.  And remember, your delivery hose (re-fill) will have the fill head coupler; part#744-026

2. SS dispense coupler-Closed, Sealed & Secure
Spring actuated and self-closing upon disconnect keeps
product contained within the dispense hose, eliminating any chance of spills. Part#744-048

Once you know you will be servicing a customer on site, this is the coupler that you will need to have on the IBC tote.

3 & 4. We can skid these two for now.

5. Container valve– Closed, Sealed & Secure
Self-closing upon disconnect, prevents unauthorized
access to the product in the container. Part#743-097

Hi folks-  we have been on the streets of Houston quiet a bit this past couple of weeks, talking Diesel Exhaust Fluid, right here in our back yard.

What we have found is the continuous confusion about dispensing from closed loop systems. Now, our job here is to help you and our distributor network understand these options; so we felt it was important to reharsh this concept once again.

Our previous post dealt with what you have available as far as distribution channels. One way IBC totes, returnable/refillable, on site refilling, at a glance.

Why don’t we dig in a little deeper on the handling and dispensing of Diesel Exhaust Fluid with a closed loop systems.

What is a DEF closed loop system? Micromatic is the system that we use, it is now company policy that only closed loop systems are being sold with either drums or IBC totes. The pictures below will illustrate the diesel exhaust fluid closed loop system.

Ok, now what we have a better picture of what that system is.  The following question came up: What do I need to make this system work for me on one way totes and refilling totes on site?

So, let’s take the first half of the question on one way DEF IBC Totes.

Say you are ready to serve one of your customer with an order of 330 gallons of Diesel Exhaust Fluid in an IBC Tote package.  How are you going to create a closed loop system when that tote will eventually be swapped out for a new one?

Starting from the top and working down into the IBC tote, here is what you need: 1) SS coupler, 2) container valve (economical) 3)down tube (275 gal or 330 gal).

When the DEF fluid is all used up, you can reuse the coupler on the new IBC coming in already filled with DEF.

The second part of the question deals with servicing your customers by providing on location re-filling.  In other words, reuse the same tote by refilling on site.  We will discuss this in detail on the next blog entry.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Houston Texas- DEF Closed loop system

Ok so based on current feed back; we are starting this new short series on Diesel Exhaust Fluid and its options on handling, storage, equipment, and more.

On the previous post, we learned that in order to meet Tier 2 emission standards, vehicle and engine manufacturers, have developed a technology called (SCR) or Selective Catalytic Reduction for diesel engines. These engines now use diesel exhaust fluid to convert the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water, pertty cool don’t you think?

So, currently one of the biggest concerns right now is contamination. So, let’s talk about the distributor cycle:

One way–> That means that you buy the IBC totes, you fill them, transport them to your customer, you dispense diesel exhaust fluid and finally dispose or recycle. Now, this can get costly as you start doing this over and over again in servicing your customer.

Returnable / Refillable–>  Again, you buy the totes, you fill them, transport them to your customer, you dispense diesel exhaust fluid, and return or refill.

On-site refilling–> Buy the IBC totes, fill them, transport to the customer, dispense diesel exhaust fluid and refill on location.

Now, storing diesel exhaust fluid in intermediate bulk sizes, the choices are as follows:

55 gallon drums: Poly drums

275 gallon IBC Totes: Blow molded

330 gallon IBC totes: Blow molded

Now that you have your options for containers and how to refill them; how do you keep Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) from being contaminated?

Transliquid’s internal policy is to sell Diesel Exhaust Fluid with closed loop systems only; you will not find open systems available through us.

Open and closed systems:

I don’t need to reinforce the fact that DEF purity is essential. So a critical system consideration in maintaining DEF quality, is the the type of system used. Let’s look:

Closed:->This system have a valve coupling system that seals the container opening on drums and totes (IBC) to prevent dirt, debris, bugs, etc…from entering the container and contaminating the diesel exhaust fluid within. The DEF inside the container is sealed and secure throughout the container life cycle.  If you have any more questions on this system, Email us.
