FALSE. There are many misconceptions about DEF in certain sectors, which brings us to the first assertion in this post: DEF is DEF regardless of the brand. Commercially, Diesel Exhaust Fluid is the same substance with the same ingredients since it is subject to a national regulation with the intention of protecting consumers. Specifically, bottled DEF brands must have the API certification printed in the label. This, in addition to being an indicator of quality, also requires manufacturers to put a batch number on said labels. Finally, the manufacturer must keep a physical sample of that batch, in order to identify any subsequent defects; there is an actual record of test tubes, and in the case of Noxguard, it can even be consulted by any buyer on our page.
It´s not uncommon for CSR technology and indicators to fail, this is a reality that occurs more often than poor quality of DEF; of course, DEF must be adequately handled, avoiding contamination once acquired. There have been reports of consumers mixing DEF with diesel, which is a huge mistake, but some think: “it must be the poor quality of the product”. In any case, manufacturers provide a guarantee policy: a physical sample of the corresponding batch is compared with the DEF contained in the unit with a diesel engine. Even though the new regulation for NOX Emissions with SCR systems began in 2010 in the United States, we are only a little over one third conversion rate. This means that only 1 out of 3 vehicles that will use SCR systems are in circulation today.
Energy demands worldwide grew 2.3% last year, setting the fastest growth rate in a decade according to the International Energy Agency, but SCR systems are still a long ways from occupying the majority in all types of diesel engines. Let’s remember that the vast majority of diesel engines with SCR systems in the US are Class 8 tractors, but many other light weight commercial vehicles, cars, farming equipment and power supply engines also come equipped with this technology.
Much has been said about electric engines replacing diesel engines. This is going to be true for the smaller vehicles like cars and SUV’s, also it is going to be true for light weight commercial vehicles with local routes. A good example might be all the school buses or mail delivery vehicles. But for heavy weight, specially class 8 trucks, diesel engines will be here for a long time until a new technology replaces fossil based energy. But as we witness with electric car manufacturers, like Tesla, setting the standard for electric cars has been challenging, so imagine what it will be like to set the standard for commercial vehicles. We would like to share some interesting facts regarding Noxguard Diesel Exhaust Fluid and it’s performance inside the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system of a diesel engine.
First of all, the difference between the combustion process of a gasoline engine and a diesel engine are significant. Diesel engines, in order to combust, require high pressure (no spark plugs) and lots of air, about 65 parts of air for every part of diesel; meanwhile gasoline engines use 14 parts of air per 1 part of gasoline. Thus the reason for NOX emissions to be higher in diesel. Also gasoline engines operate at lower temperatures than diesel engines.
And now, the magic of the chemistry of our Noxguard DEF inside the SCR System step by step:
Combustion is performed in the engine, and emissions are released.
In the SCR system, Noxgard DEF is sprayed to the fumes and the chemical magic begins.
With the high heat of combustion, the DEF converts to ammonium.
Ammonium is mixed with the NOX of the fumes, and there is water vapor present too.
The result of this mixture produces Nitrogen (which we find naturally in the air we breathe).
And on the other side we obtain water, yes water.
The Chemistry looks like this:
Ammonium which are 3 atoms of Hydrogen plus one of Nitrogen (4NH3).
Plus NOX which is 1 atom of Nitrogen plus 2 atoms of Oxygen (2NO2).
Adding in Oxygen (O2).
Results in Nitrogen (N) plus Water molecules (H2O).
Yes, of course, you need the specially designed SCR system that has all the dosage technology and the filtration process to accomplish the job.
According to Icopal Noxite, a british site that is versed on this issue. NOx mainly impacts on respiratory conditions causing inflammation of the airways at high levels. Long term exposure can decrease lung function, increase the risk of respiratory conditions and increase the response to allergens. NOx also contributes to the formation of fine particles (PM) and ground level ozone, both of which are associated with adverse health effects.
Professor Roy Harrison, an environmental health expert at the University of Birmingham in the UK, in his research suggests that the premature deaths from NOx could be 10 times higher than those from exhaust emissions of particles.
NOx has direct and indirect effects on human health, it can cause:
Increased susceptibility to pulmonary inflammation.
It can indirectly affect humans by damaging the ecosystems they rely on in water and on land—harming animals and plants. Also emitted in diesel fumes are solid particles which can:
Penetrate deep into the lungs and cause cancer.
Chronic breathing problems.
Premature death in people with heart or lung disease.
Although these affections can be long term damages, we must try to stop air pollution. Applying strict regulations on diesel engines manufacturers with a very wide range of selective catalytic reduction technologies such as Noxguard DEF, is something that can help improve on this matter.
